Fontainebleau Wildfire Update: A massive wildfire in France’s historic Fontainebleau Forest, located about 60 kilometers southeast of Paris, continues to draw a major emergency response after scorching thousands of hectares of woodland and forcing widespread evacuations. The blaze, which erupted during an intense heatwave, has become one of the most significant wildfire incidents to affect the Paris region in recent years.
More than 800 firefighters, supported by water-bombing aircraft, helicopters, and hundreds of emergency vehicles, have been deployed to contain the flames. Authorities temporarily evacuated around 900 residents, while sections of the A6 motorway and nearby rail services were disrupted as smoke and fire threatened surrounding communities.
French officials have confirmed that the fire has burned more than 2,000 hectares of forest. Investigators are also examining the cause of the blaze, with two suspects arrested. Prosecutors said one suspect allegedly admitted to deliberately starting a fire using gasoline and a lighter, while another reportedly acknowledged accidentally igniting vegetation after discarding a cigarette.
Although firefighters have made progress in containing the wildfire, officials warn that hotspots and underground smoldering remain a concern. Residents are urged to follow evacuation orders, avoid restricted areas, and monitor official updates as firefighting operations continue.
The Fontainebleau wildfire highlights the growing challenges posed by extreme heat, dry conditions, and heightened wildfire risks across Europe during the 2026 summer season.
